I would definitely call this a communications initiative because it helps everyone stay connected. We can always reach anyone whenever we want, which is especially important since we all work from home and operate remotely. Any organization that has geographically dispersed employees would find this kind of platform very valuable.

The other initiative I can think of is around onboarding new employees. Whenever someone new joins, we have several of our existing team members take up the induction program for them. This way, all the team members get to welcome the new person, they get to know each other, and interaction becomes much easier from the start. The ice breaks naturally, and people start to engage and collaborate more comfortably.

As for measuring effectiveness for the first initiative, we look at productivity, responsiveness, and how quickly communication flows across the team. For the second one, we look at how well people connect with each other and how easily work progresses once they've built those initial relationships.

Weekly Digest Centralizes Essential Company Information

One of our most successful internal communication tools is our weekly digest. It contains a summary (with transcripts) of all essential meetings, deadlines, and initiatives, along with lighter fare like birthdays, work anniversaries, etc. I've worked hard to keep our internal communications efficient and relevant, and creating the weekly digest forces me to review what we've done and focus on what's essential.

Micro-Update Videos Increase Clarity and Inclusion

One internal communications initiative that significantly improved employee engagement was launching a weekly micro-update video series. Instead of relying solely on emails or memos, we created short, two- to three-minute videos highlighting team achievements, company news, and upcoming priorities. Each video included a personal message from leadership and featured different departments to foster visibility and recognition.

Effectiveness was measured through engagement metrics and feedback loops. We tracked video open rates, view completions, and employee responses through internal surveys and Slack reactions. Within a few months, participation in optional initiatives and cross-department collaboration increased noticeably, and survey scores reflected higher clarity on company goals and a stronger sense of inclusion. The initiative worked because it combined visual storytelling, personal connection, and concise messaging, making communication both accessible and engaging.

Off-Topic Channels Strengthen Remote Team Relationships

Sometimes it's the simple things that have the biggest impact. One thing I did that led to much better employee engagement, especially among our remote workers, was simply allowing the creation of off-topic channels on Slack. These channels quickly evolved and split, and we now have an office social channel, a pets and kids channel, a sports channel, and a film and TV channel. These channels get lots of activity, we haven't seen a drop in productivity, and we have seen much better conversation flow in meetings, especially between departments.
